The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 has recognized leading Indian universities across diverse parameters of academic and institutional excellence. This year’s rankings have been assessed on the basis of Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity and Peer Perception. These weighted criteria ensure that the rankings reflect not only academic performance but also the social and global impact of institutions.
In the Universities Category, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru has secured the top position, reaffirming its reputation in advanced research and scientific innovation. It is followed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, known for its strong academic culture and critical scholarship, and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, which continues to lead in multidisciplinary learning and global engagement. Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and the University of Delhi stand as symbols of inclusivity and academic diversity, while the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, carries forward its legacy of research and cultural heritage. The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, is recognized for its technological innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, emphasizes holistic and value-based education, whereas Jadavpur University, Kolkata, is celebrated for its innovation and social relevance. The Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, maintains its position as a historic and forward-looking institution contributing to education at national and international levels.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015.
This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
