Trauma and Peace Studies is a critical interdisciplinary field that explores the intersection between trauma, conflict and peace building. It examines the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of trauma experienced by individuals and communities in the aftermath of conflict, violence and human rights abuses. It also investigates strategies for healing, reconciliation and fostering peace in post-conflict societies. The field draws on a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, political science and peace studies to understand the impacts of trauma and develop effective ways to promote sustainable peace.
Trauma is often a direct consequence of violent conflict and its impact can be seen in physical, emo-tional and psychological manifestations that last long after the cessation of violence. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and various forms of social alienation are common effects. In the context of conflict and war, trauma is not only experienced by direct victims such as refugees, war veterans and survivors of sexual violence but also by entire communities that suffer from the disruption of social fabric, loss of trust and collective grief.
Peace studies on the other hand focus on understanding conflict resolution processes, the dynamics of peace building and the ways in which societies can transition from war to peace. The field involves addressing the root causes of conflict, restoring relationships and creating the conditions for sustain-able peace. One crucial aspect of peace building is addressing trauma and its long-term effects as unresolved trauma can perpetuate cycles of violence and hinder reconciliation processes. Trauma and Peace Studies seek to understand how trauma influences conflict dynamics, how societies can heal from the scars of violence and how peace can be achieved through trauma-informed practices. Healing must go beyond individual psychological recovery to include collective healing processes that unite communities and build a shared vision for a peaceful future.
